artificial eye

Care and Handling

To Insert:

To insert the artificial eye, pull the upper lid as high as it will go and insert the prosthesis under the upper lid and while still pushing, pull the lower lid out from under the lower edge of the artificial eye. If the prosthesis is not positioned correctly, remove the prosthesis and reinsert.

To Remove:

To remove an artificial eye, attach the suction cup to the iris area and pull the lower edge of the artificial eye out over the lower lid. Next pull the artificial eye down from under the upper lid. Remove your prosthesis once or twice a month or as directed by your ocularist.

Cleaning:

Using freshly washed hands, remove the prosthesis and inspect it closely. If deposits are seen, scrub with a clean cotton cloth, using a firm touch, then rinse with sterile saline and replace.

Disinfecting:

If disinfection is needed, for instance after dropping the artificial eye on the floor, soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 20 minutes and rinse well with sterile saline before reinserting into the socket.

Lubrication:

During windy or dry conditions, many people have problems with the surface of the artificial eye drying out. This causes the eyelid to stick to the artificial eye and causes irritation and mucous discharge.

We recommend using lubrication, eye drops, or ointment. Apply a very small amount just above the iris of the artificial eye as needed.
